Bringing  New Technology to Old Stories

Great news! The Sound and Story Project has recieved a 3 year major grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to share archival oral histories through radio programs, websites, mobile apps and new media.  Working in partnership with museums and libraries, together we will  breath new life into the stories that represent the diverse voices of the Hudson Valley. Our goal is to reach a new generation of listeners.

Together with The Southeastern New York Library Resources Council in Highland, The Greater Hudson Heritage Network in Elmsford and the Hudson River Valley Institute at Marist College in Poughkeepsie we received a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to use the latest digital technology and social media outlets to repurpose archived oral history collections in a project titled “Voices of the Hudson Valley: Bringing New Technology to Old Stories for 21st Century Audiences.”

The demonstration project will work closely with five Hudson Valley libraries and museums to develop ways to excite the public about the area’s often unused oral history collections. It features a peer-training program designed to empower library and museum personnel with the necessary skills to reach 21st-century listeners. A New Technology Conference hosted by the Greater Hudson Heritage Network and the Hudson River Valley Institute is planned. This model project will begin in November 2011 and is scheduled to be completed by September 2014.

Voices is one of 48 projects from around the country to receive funding from IMLS this year.
