\"Every Saturday it looked like Beacon was burning.\" Why?

Listen to Robert Cahill and Tom LaBarr's story and find out!

This story is part of River Voices Audio Adventure Tour. This sign is located in Beacon, NY at the Beacon Waterfront Park.

Robert Cahill is a Beacon resident and former Mayor of Beacon. Tom LaBarr is a former Beacon Sloop Club President.

Standing in the middle of the beautiful Beacon Riverfront Park it is hard to imagine that it was once seven and a half acres of burning garbage. The city dump burned almost every Saturday in the 1950s and 60s.

In 1964 the city's new incinerator took over the job and the burning at the dump stopped.  Then in 1970 the Beacon Sloop Club lead a grass roots campaign to turn the eye sore into a beautiful river front park.
